Verona Flash 2, RSC U-14 Girls Lightning 1

The U14 Girls Lighting team played the Verona SC Flash Saturday morning and unfortunately lost 2-1, even though the field conditions were very challenging (wet and cold!) which resulted in the game even being stopped once for lightning stikes in the area.

The Lightning (no pun intended!) girls had two solid shots carom off the goalpost that could have easily changed the game's final outcome.

Goalie Maddie Schroeder played tremendous in the goalmouth, stopping several point blank shots, while Allie Kitching proved her mastery of playing the sweeper role by continually being in the right place at the right time in breaking up a myriad of goal scoring threats.

The midfield was led by the tireless efforts of Monica Speth and Kate Heaps, who were both constant threats to the Verona team with their cutting runs and well-placed through-balls to teamates.

Ashley Millard, who had gotten knocked out of the game by a hard challenge from the Verona goalie, re-entered the game and moments later scored a goal from an assist by Grace Randles.

Unfortunately, due to the lightning strike and the resultant game delay, the game was called 10 minutes early, just as the Lightning were putting significant pressure on the Verona goal for the tying score.

Next home game is May 9, 2009 at 11 a.m. against the Milton Flash.
